Chasetown boss Charlie Blakemore paid tribute to his 'special bunch of players' after their historic FA Cup run ended against Cardiff today.

The Scholars took the lead through a 17th minute Kevin McNaughton own goal only for former Villa midfielder Peter Whittingham to level in first half injury time.

Seventeen-year-old Aaron Ramsey (60) headed the Bluebirds infront before he set up Paul Parry to make it 3-1 in the 73rd minute.

But Blakemore was delighted with his players. "I am so proud of the players - it was a fantastic performance and we knew we had to pull out something special just to stay in the game.

"And we did - we stayed in it for long periods. Quality showed in the end, and I knew that would happen.

"They had a lot of the play and we rode our luck a bit.

"But I have to be proud of the lads because they worked their socks off and tried to create openings.

"I've got a special bunch of players here and we didn't want this run to end.

"But there is always next year and we've got to go and beat it now by reaching the fourth round."

Cardiff's former Wolves boss Dave Jones also joined in the tribute to the Scholars.

"I'm honoured to be part of the day, but all the headlines should be about Chasetown and it was great credit to their players.

"Their players were magnificent and they have just taken everything out of our dressing room as souvenirs".
