Ibrar Banaras, aged 22, was accused of breeding the type of pit bulls commonly used in dog fighting from a former tyre yard in Stourbridge. Banaras of Hill Street, Lye, admitted three counts of possessing illegal dogs and was found guilty of a forth count after a trial, which ended yesterday.

He has now been banned from keeping dogs for 10 years, given 250-hours community service and a 20-week sentence suspended for two-years. The dogs, all of the pit bull variety, are to be destroyed.

Banaras had used the illegal dogs for breeding and had sold on some pups already, Halesowen Magistrates Court heard. The dogs are made up of a mix of dangerous breeds like pit bulls and American Bulldogs.

Mrs Karen Hackett, prosecuting, said one of the dogs had been so vicious it had not been safe to allow it any human contact.

She said: "There is this cocktail of dangerous dogs which can be bred together to come up with the type of dogs which contravene the Dangerous Dogs Act."

Mrs Hackett said the cost to the police for keeping the dogs since January had rocketed to £12,000. Banaras, who is on benefits, was ordered to pay £1,000 compensation to the police.

Exdol Mitchell, defending, said Banaras had not been aware the dogs were illegal and would not have bought or bred them had he known.

Police raided a former tyre yard in Attwood Street, Lye, in January this year where they seized 18 dogs. Eight, belonging to Banaras, were identifed as illegal types. A ninth dog was seized from Banaras's father's home in Wavell Road, Quarry Bank, in March.

Banaras admitted three of the dogs were illegal but denied the rest of the six charges.

Five of the charges were dropped and the ninth was proved after a trial.
