The leader of the Wyre Forest district council has decided to step down from the position following disappointing local election results.

Conservative leader councillor Stephen Clee has stepped down after six years in charge of the party, and three years as council leader.

He was left disappointed with Thursday's performance with his party winning only one seat – leaving them four short of taking overall control.

Councillor Clee has been unable to get over the winning line of 22 seats. The party has remained on 18 for the last two years.

Cabinet member for finance, councillor John Paul Campion, takes the reigns of the party, becoming one of the youngest leaders of the council.

Councillor Clee said: "I have had a fantastic time being leader. We have achieved a great deal for the good of the people of Wyre Forest.

"I am pleased to be leaving the stage in a much stronger position than when I took over. I wish the local party well and I know the district group and council will be well served by Councillor Campion."

Councillor Clee's seat was not up for contest at Thursday's election and he will continue to represent Bewdley ward.
