Neither Rosa or Finkler have made a league start this season - and the Brazilian midfielder slipped further down the pecking order this week when he was left out of the reserve team for the friendly at Coventry.
Wolves chief McCarthy reckons the pair don't suit his preferred 4-4-2 formation, and admits that has hampered their first team chances.
"They are both back training but at the moment both of them are not in the squad," he said.
"Perhaps its the case that the 4-4-2 system that I play is not the ideal formation for either of them. Neither of them play as a traditional winger, central midfielder or striker - both of them would like to play just behind a striker in a 4-3-3 formation and I don't play that way so it has been very difficult for them."
Finkler was McCarthy's first signing as Wolves manager as the tough talking Tyke tried to bolster a squad stripped to its bare bones by the summer fire sale.
But the 21-year-old has struggled with the language since joining on a season long loan from Brazilian side Juventude in July - and may not last until the end of his loan spell in the summer.
Hungarian international Rosa looked set to play a big part in McCarthy's plans after showing sparkling form in pre-season but the former Ferencvaros man, who signed a new three year deal at the end of last season, has suffered with injuries.
The 10 times capped Hungarian has played only once this campaign - at Chesterfield in the Carling Cup.
